Step 1
An argument is considered to be a fallacy not because it simply commits an error, but since it poses a risk that makes a person be driven to an error. Specifically, a fallacy is bad reasoning, which appears to be good. In his Sophistical Refutations, Aristotle argues that fallacies are counterfeits of legitimate reasoning (“What is a Fallacy,” n.d.). Informal and formal fallacies have errors in logic or reasoning, resulting from invalid arguments. In particular, formal fallacies are arguments with invalid structures, while informal fallacies are arguments with irrelevant or incorrect premises (Gibbs, 2010). Consequently, a great awareness, discussion, and recognition of logic-based errors lead to the improvement of patient safety.

An example of a formal fallacy is that “if a drug infusion is delivered to a patient, the syringe will empty” (Gibbs, 2010). However, it does not mean that when the syringe is emptying, the medicine is delivered to a patient since the infusion might be disconnected.
