The post-partum period is one of the most sensitive period for pregnant women because of the several risks, especially depression that might affect the child’s development milestones. Several risk factors of PPD are anxiety during pregnancy, stressful life events, medical history of depression, and limited social support and personality factors of neuroticism among others. The purpose of this paper is to critically review a peer-reviewed study to identify specific social-demographic and other clinical risk factors for PPD that can be useful for physician to handle depression case findings among pregnant women.
An article by, Katon, W., Russo, J., & Gavin, A. (2014). The chronic of postpartum depression. Journal of women's health, 23(9), 753-759, presents a study to examine a wide range of socio-demographic factors and clinical risk factors associated with PPD. The article presents a cohort study involving pregnant women from 4 to 8 months pregnant, at University of Washington Hospital conducted between January 2004 – June 2011(Katon, Russo & Gavin, 2014).
A survey questionnaire was used to collect data from participants in different trimesters; follow-up of 6 weeks was conducted. The research used clinic staff to screen those eligible and obtain written consent from participants to access their medical records. The exclusion criteria were well stipulated stating that individuals below 15 years were not permitted. Those who submitted incomplete questionnaires because of limited English knowledge or mental challenges were not included (Katon, Russo & Gavin, 2014). All research protocols were observed with the survey procedures approved University review board. The study sample was appropriately selected, with 3,039 screened, 1,423 women were eligible as compared to 1,616 (Katon, Russo & Gavin, 2014).
The Fischer Exact tests and t-test were used to analyze changeable factors for both women with and without PPD. The Hierarchical logistic regression analysis determined the variable variations of PPD (Katon, Russo & Gavin, 2014).
