The focus of this commentary by Ann Rogers and Rod Sheaff demonstrates the functionality of integrating the primary health care in a National Health Service system (NHS). Evidence from the United Kingdom has demonstrated that recognition of the role played by the primary health care service providers has a significant role in health of communities. Structures that facilitate integration at the functional level (service delivery at community settings) rather than corporate level (physician managerial roles and recognition) for a NHS primary care system are the more to cultivate as evidenced form the U.K experience. These structures include regional Primary Care Groups (PCGs), increased role and freedom of General Practitioners (GP) and formation of Personal Medical Services. It also encompasses networking of primary healthcare providers and patient information sharing. Promoting the integration of primary health care also considers maximizing the role of both the formal and informal through respective government`s efforts.
