James is a 24-year-old psychiatric client who has been using marijuana for the last two years. He has been admitted on several occasions in the rehabilitation center with complaints of increased irritability, insomnia, anxiety, abnormal craving for weed, and detectable levels of depressive episodes, following abrupt stoppage of marijuana smoking. Cannabis withdrawal disorder is one of the mental idiosyncrasies associated with prolonged and persistent use of cannabis. The cannabis withdrawal syndrome has been classified as a mental disorder based on a criterion developed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fifth Edition) and cannabis dependence based on the International Classification of Diseases [ICD]-10) criterion (Bonnet & Preuss, 2017). The authors note a substantial body of scientific evidence showing that cessation from long-term and regular cannabis leads spectrum of cannabis withdrawal syndrome marked by mood and behavioral symptoms of varying intensities. More often, the symptoms associated with marijuana use withdrawal, diminished appetite, mood changes, increased irritability, sleep difficulties such as insomnia, headaches, loss of concentration or increased carrying for cannabis or marijuana, and sometimes chills or sweating.
