Research Question
The problem of human trafficking has long festered across the world with many governments making deliberate efforts to put a stop to this inhumane activity (Hepburn & Simon, 2013). To this end, the authors of this research papers sought to explore the aspect of human trafficking, and particularly that of minors in Florida. Furthermore, the authors sought to explore the linkages, if any, between childhood adversity and the likelihood of said children being trafficked (Reid, Baglivio, Piquero, Greenwald, & Epps, 2017). As such, the research question this study looked to answer was whether human trafficking and childhood adversity share any correlations or linkages, and especially in Florida.
Study Participants
Considering the fact that this study was designed to assess Florida’s human trafficking patterns with respect to children and other minors, these formed the participant demographics for the study. In order to identify their sample, the researchers matched hotline reporting records with accepted and identified cases of human trafficking among minor boys and girls between the years of 2009 and 2015 (Reid et al., 2017). To this end, the researchers settled on a sample size of 913 juveniles that fully met all the preconditions presented for participants. Considering the fact that human trafficking among minors was the core of the study, other attributes such as race, gender, and age were not considered in selecting the sample.
Study Design
Taking into account the fact that this study relied on the collection of data on human trafficking and its assessment across different genders, the study design of choice for the study was an analytical observational study. This kind of study design enabled the researchers to analytically observe the patterns surrounding minor human trafficking and adverse childhood experiences (Reid et al., 2017). Simultaneously, it allowed said researchers to assess the matched groups of their samples for any existing associations between outcomes and exposures with respect to minor human trafficking in Florida.
