Bora, Jayanta Kumar, Rajesh Raushan, and Wolfgang Lutz. "The persistent influence of caste on under-five mortality: Factors that explain the caste-based gap in high focus Indian states." PLoS One 14.8 (2019): e0211086.
This material examines the continued impact of caste on under-five deaths in India. The authors look at the factors contributing to the caste-linked mortality gap in the high-focus India. The authors analyzed information from the National Family Health Survey and found that the under-five mortality rate of Scheduled Castes and communities is higher than that of other castes in all states. The authors discovered that access to healthcare, maternal education, and household wealth contribute to the caste-based gap in mortality. They concluded that there is an urgent need to address the underlying factors contributing to the caste-based mortality gap. This article is useful in my research because addressing the gap can provide insight into how the community can heal from the trauma.
Desai, Sonalde, and Amaresh Dubey. "Caste in 21st century India: Competing narratives." Economic and political weekly (2011): 40-49.
The article examines the role of caste in modern India. The authors argue that caste is still a decisive factor in Indian society but is also undergoing transformation and is no longer the same as in the past. They discuss how caste is represented in different kinds of narratives, such as those presented in the media, official government discourse, and academic research. The authors also explore the implications of caste for contemporary Indian politics and economics. In conclusion, the authors suggest that to understand the complexities of caste in modern India, it is necessary to consider the various narratives and perspectives of different societal stakeholders. This article provides an overview of the current debates about caste in India and its implications for the country's future. This makes it relevant to my area of study because varying views can provide ideas on the best course of action to promote resilience.
Johri, Akshay, and Pooja V. Anand. "Life satisfaction and well-being at the intersections of caste and gender in India." Psychological Studies 67.3 (2022): 317-331.
The core argument of this material is to explore how well-being and life satisfaction are affected by the linkages of gender and caste in India. The authors use data from the India Human Development Survey to analyze how these intersections impact life satisfaction, subjective well-being, and other well-being indicators. They find that life satisfaction and subjective well-being are significantly lower for women and people of lower caste and that there are significant differences in how these groups experience life satisfaction and well-being.
