The various studies on the gender and sexuality of Chinese women from earlier decades have not only enriched the gender research and feminist theories but also complicated it as well. This paper analyses various essays that demonstrate, from various important perspectives, the dynamics, transnational nature of gender and sexuality issues in China. Interrogating the various perspectives on feminist studies that are typically based on the west, this paper will focus on Chinese differences as an attempt to address the complex history of gender and sexuality formations in China. The chosen articles for this paper have addressed feminist issues in various parts of the world and they have provoked an unprecedented and interesting discussion on the state of gender and sexuality. Moreover, they share a general focus on various issues such as culture.
Steedman, Carolyn. Landscape for a good woman: A story of two lives. Rutgers UniversityPress, 1987.
This book takes us through a story of a girl from her childhood memories and her relation with her mother. Although the book addresses various issues in the society, it is mainly concerned with the conflict that exists in the levels of analysis. Moreover, the author is concerned with how poorly the story of her mother fits in the society conventions “structures of class analysis and schools of cultural criticism” (p.6). Steedman argues these conventions through a number of “models of imposition and transmission” through the use of a “fairy-tale” to link cultural, social and economic structures to individuals who are constrained by them. Steeman’s main conflict is not with the modes of analysis but rather with history itself as a medium which prevents us from identifying cracks in the system. The book challenges us to be concerned with problems with the system and understand where they can be found. Although the book is biographical, it has proved to be important in addressing historical structures from a family perspective. Although the book is centred on patriarchy, it provides a shift to the analysis of class. Therefore, Steedman attempts to demonstrate that families cannot be ignored when trying to address class issues in the society. Class is also shaped by family social status, parents’ aspirations and other factors.
Bacchetta, Paola. "Rescaling transnational" queerdom": Lesbian and" lesbian" identitarypositionalities in Delhi in the 1980s." Antipode 34.5 (2002): 947-973.
In this essay, Bacchetta takes it upon herself to reflect and analyze various issues surrounding feminism in the modern world. In this essay, Bacchetta examines the academic literatures which in her on understanding are “created through a range of desires, including queer academic and activist longings for cross-queer connectivity, solidarity, and community.” She argues that these productions produce opposite effects from which they are supposed to evoke. In this essay, Bacchetta addresses various problems that the reactions to the efforts from the concerned groups may pose to the communities. In order to do so, she examines the reactions present in academic contexts though she acknowle...
