ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Writing #3

SYNOPSIS OF WRITING #3

What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography is a citation with an annotation. In other words, it is a list of sources with notes detailing information about that source. Refer to the example/tutorial on Canvas.

What goes into each “annotation”?

1. A standard summary of the source. Just tell me in 2-3 sentences what your source is about.

2. An evaluation of your source given by you. A few ways to evaluate your source include: where it was published, who wrote it, the quality of the research (quantifiable nature), the way the research was conducted, evidence of bias…

3. A statement about how this information could potentially be used in your paper.

COMPONENTS OF ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

The following are just a few things to keep in mind while writing:

1. Since this is a new assignment, it will require new work on your part. DO NOT copy and paste the Inquiry section from your prospectus into the introduction of your annotated bib. This is considered self-plagiarism. These are two separate assignments; therefore, they require separate work.

  • You should be more familiar with your subject matter now, so writing another smaller introduction will give you the opportunity to re-write what you had before and demonstrate your comfort with and knowledge of your topic.
2. You need 5 NEW sources for this assignment. Do not use the same sources you used for your prospectus.

3. I will not be reading every annotation. I will be selecting one at random and basing your entire grade on that one annotation. So, make sure every single one includes all of the information outlined on this sheet.

4. Your grade for this assignment is 50% content and 50% formatting. Pay close attention to any and all samples provided for you in class.

AUDIENCE FOR THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Just like Writing #2, your audience for this assignment is also your research director (me). For this assignment, you are still going through the motions of outlining your research to me. In thi

case, you’re giving me details about your sources that show me (a) how relevant your sources are to your research question and (b) how you plan on using them in your paper.

FORMAT FOR THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Your formatting for this assignment will also be MLA. Therefore, it will need to be in Times New Roman 12-point font, double spaced, with 1” margins all around. The documentation style for your citations will also need to be in MLA.

This assignment will need to be at least 2 pages long, and a maximum of 3.

EVALUATON OF THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

1. Are all of the necessary elements present (2-3 sentence summary, evaluation, statement of relevance)?

2. How thorough has the writer been in providing sources relevant to his/her topic?

3. How specific are the details?

4. How clear is the style?

5. Is the document free of any formatting errors?

6. How well-controlled are grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation?

Due: Sunday, April 4th

Annotated Bibliography
Reeves, Thomas C. McCarthyism. Hinsdale, Ill: Dryden Press, 1973.
This source is relevant since it analyzes the profound effect of McCarthyism and its consequence on American history. Thomas Reeves, a respected poet himself, draws attention by showing how McCarthyism negatively impacted the American people’s lives and careers. Moreover, Reeves also points out how McCarthyism tainted the image of the country. Joe McCarthy, the Senator to Wisconsin, was the same before, but when he cried communism, the World seemed to hear him out. Furthermore, this followed the Cold War between Russia and the United States, which led to hardships such as unemployment and high inflation. Reeves highlights that when this occurred, the society looked for something or for someone to blame; Communists. Because of this, a Witch hunt throughout the entire country took place. However, Thomas has succeeded in showing how McCarthy helped spread this fear and prove that his debate is similar to my view.
Schrecker, Ellen. Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America. Boston: Little, Brown, 1998.
This source is credible because Ellen Schrecker discusses the Cold War policies used to find American Communists. Ellen further examines the complex nature and following actions of the McCarthyism fear. Ellen explains how New Deals attacks develop into assaults on Communists. Ellen’s scope of argument concurs together with mine that McCarthyism is not a development of one event but rather a culmination of the fear of communism.
Adams, Gretchen A. The Specter of Salem: Remembering the Witch Trials in Nineteenth-Century America. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2008.
On McCarthyism, Gretchen focuses on the Salem Witch Trials, which took place during the 19th Century. Besides, Gretchen illustrates how innocent people were punished and prosecuted for crimes they did not commit. The Salem Witch Trials saw hundreds of people punished for using witchcraft. Gretchen’s view supports my opini...
