Modernism, Postmodernism, Neoclassicism from the Handmaid's Tale
The article talks about modernism, postmodernism and neocolonialism as depicted from Margret Atwood in Handmaid's tale. To start with definitions, modernism is a field that scopes several aspects from people's cultures and cultural changes in the western societies. Culture is a dynamic aspect that integrates changes from time to time as people interact with other people where they adapt new cultures to their initial ways of living. Scholars view the late 19th century and early 20th century as the time where modernism was at the peak. The reason behind this is that modern aspects such as industrialization were vibrant during this time. Post-modernism talks about the theories formulated to express aspects of modernism such as industrial growth, cultures and the way different cultures grew and became dominant among several societies in the west. On the other hand, neocolonialism talks about imperialist practices where most states especially from the west used military power to dominate and influence the states in the third world countries’ bracket. The aim of the paper is to use annotated bibliography on scholarly articles to integrate the articles’ content to the aspects of modernism, postmodernism and neocolonialism as expressed by Margret Atwood.
