In this journal, Ward Teaching in a Mental Hospital, Frances C. Thielbar agrees that the ultimate aim of nursing education, particularly in a mental ward, is to produce a professional who is bent on providing the best possible care to the patients and who is mindful and adaptable. The author recognizes that while formal education and classroom instruction is necessary to provide the learners with enough knowledge, it is by no means satisfactory. He states that since no two patients are the same, the learner should be equipped with knowledge and experience in dealing with different cases and patients. The author posits that the ward nurses should be taught how to recognize the patients as individuals rather than as patients, as is the case in a formal classroom setting, which leads them to form an actual working relationship between the nurses and the patients. The author postulates that the patient's treatment should be based on the patient themselves rather than on the disease, citing that no two schizophrenic patients, for example, are the same. The author further proposes measures that will enable the student to view patients as individuals and build a strong relationship. For example, the student should be introduced to the wards as early as possible and should be granted an opportunity to listen in on the questioning, prognosis, and treatment of psychiatric patients.
The article is largely dependent on the opinions and experience of the author, Dr. Frances C. Thielbar, who was a registered nurse until the time of her death. She was the chairperson of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing graduate division and highly knowledgeable and experienced in her work. In addition, she backs up her claims and opinions with known facts from well-acclaimed doctors and nurses in the field and references all her sources appropriately, which adds to the credibility of the information. I found the information to be particularly useful and agree that ward nurses should be exposed to knowledge in the classroom setting and the wards to get a feel of the actual work and build connections with patients. This, I believe, produces more professional and well-trained nurses who can handle patients in the right way.
