In this chapter, Baym presents a discussion on communities and networks. The author asserts that after the invention of one-to-one communications, developers came up with the internet to develop other platforms for group communications. The author also outlines some of the communications groups that were developed. For example, SF-Lovers was the first communication group to be developed. Other examples of these groups included Bay Area Counter-culture hangout. This chapter, also discusses how people are organizing themselves into groups and networks online. Additionally, the author examines the meaning of a community and what it means in online groups.
The author also asserts that the term ‘online community’ is a term that applies to marketers and developers who can create a site and name it a community. Today a lot of technological innovations have led to the development of different platforms and this has resulted in a lot of differences in the behaviors a certain group exhibits. The author also asserts that the internet has become a major way of building a local community and creating a community that fosters civic management (Baym, 2010) Additionally a lot of online groups are associated with geographical space and those people who are involved in various online groups think of these groups as shared places. This article provides extensive research on the importance of online groups and the internet in a community. For example, the author asserts that online groups have provided bridging capital. The data and information that has been provided in this article is very important in determining the importance of online groups and network. Baym has provided valid points that are helpful when researching communities and network but her article will not be the sole work that will be used for the research.
