In the video, Danielle Martin, a family physician, gives tips on how to defeat insomnia. She agrees that insomnia is a major problem in the population, but warns against the use of sleeping pills which can be addictive. The tips that she gives include going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning, even during the weekends, creating a regular before-bed routine, having a dimly lit bedroom, and doing exercise during the day.

Even if a lot of researches have been done on the effect of insomnia on a person’s mental health, not much has been found in its effect on physical health. The authors of the study found out that insomnia with short duration of sleep is related to a higher risk of neurocognitive morbidity, cardiometabolic morbidity and even death. On the other hand, insomnia backed by normal duration of sleep leads to cognitive-emotional arousal and sleep misperception, but no physiological or neurocognitive signs are experienced. Sleep duration should be made an important part when evaluating and diagnosing insomnia.
