Rising cost of college tuition is no longer a secret in the country. What discourages families and students is that the cost of tuition increases by about ten percent annually (Enhrenberg, 2009). Consequently, the lower and middle people are getting it more challenging to afford accessing quality of education of what their children deserve to get. It is important for colleges to increase both funding and scholarship opportunities to supplement federal financial aid and cater for students’ education.
The college cost continues increasing, but family incomes remain stagnant. According to Thelin (2013), even if most colleges provide scholarships, the offers are quite limited in slots and are greatly competitive. Moreover, the government has failed to ensure that the federal financial aid given to students address the increasing costs of college tuition. Since 1992, the government subsidized loans have remained stagnant at $23,000. Many students, not only international students but also local students, find it difficult to get federal financial aid. Many lower and middle-income families struggle to pay for the rising costs of college tuition. Both international and local students are expected to compete for merit-based scholarships, which some colleges offer. Besides that, most students are compelled to depend on their parents to pay college expenses.
Colleges claim that they are not obtaining sufficient government funding and therefore they have no alternative, but to increase the costs of tuition (Martin, 2005). Furthermore, college officials contend that they are spending a lot of money on paying their employees, conducting research, buying equipment and materials and building facilities, and thus they must increase to tuition to sustain these expenses.
It vital to develop a shared objective both for parents and students who feel that it is unfair and awful that colleges increase tuition costs annually and college authorities maintain that tuition costs have to be increased so that cater for funds required to sustain the running of college operations.
One approach to tackle this issue is that colleges should ensure that both merit and need-based scholarships are increased. Heller (2013) opines that the implementation of these programs will remain vital to serving as supplementary funds to the federal financial aid. It is also significant for colleges to increase funding to cater for education program of the international students who are disqualified for federal financial aid (Archibald and Feldman, 2010). Such a plan will develop college diversity, and thus, will attract talented and brilliant individuals across the world. In addition, it will minimize attrition rate and offer relief for students who are burdened with overwhelming debts and student loans.
