Impacts of Technology on Children
Clinton, C. & Steyer, J. (2012). Is the Internet Hurting Children? CNN
With the progress of technology, social media has had an explosive growth thereby reshaping our communications. Digital devices and smartphones have transformed the lives of children at home in school. A significant percentage have joined Facebook while others use smartphones and tablets to download apps. However, many people do not know the impact of technology and the use of this media will have on children when they grow up.
Children have an online history at a tender age. When they are 5, many of them interact with tablets and computers. By the time they are 7 or 8, the majority play video games regularly. Teenagers chat more than 300 times per month. Thus, most children spend most of their time on the internet than with their parents.
Using the internet for long can alter how a child’s brain works. Too much multimedia content and hypertext limits their attention span, grants them poor focus and lower comprehension, and exposes them to depression.
Additionally, technology alters people’s essential concepts of and reverence for privacy. Many young people are posting and sharing their private details and thoughts on social media without considering the prospective consequences.
An urgent public conversation is required to discuss the means and methods through which social media can be used to empower children to identify their purpose, voice, and potentially build the next revolution of technology.
