Annotated Bibliography Guidelines
Purpose: The purpose of this activity is for students to choose a topic of interest related to the
course content and further explore the subject as it relates to sociology. This paper will also provide
the information and documentation for your teaching project. Read the guidelines for the teaching
project (see details below) before you start the annotated bibliography so you can select an
appropriate topic.
Annotated Bibliography: A bibliography is a list of sources used to research a topic. Annotation
implies that you have (a) summarized the source, (b) evaluated it, and (c) described its relevance to
your research or practice. Unlike a review of the literature, where your sources are integrated and
presented by themes, an annotated bibliography addresses one article at a time. For this assignment,
you will need to find three peer reviewed, scholarly journal articles no more than 10 years old (not
websites, books, newspapers, etc.. At least one must be a report of research. Look for items that
provide a variety of perspectives on your topic, but make sure they are relevant to your teaching
project. For example, while a report on research done in rural China may be interesting, it might not
be relevant for your audience. If in doubt, ask me and I will look at it.
There are two main types of annotated bibliographies, descriptive or analytical. Although you will
have to consider the appropriateness of the sources and examine their legitimacy before deciding to
use them, for the actual paper, include information most relevant to your teaching project. Look at
the rubric to be sure you meet all the requirements. You are welcome to use additional sources for
the teaching project, but you only need to write up three journal articles for the annotated
bibliography. Please list the additional sources on an additional page.
Topic Selection. The topic of the paper should be chosen from content that is discussed in the book
or course material. Frequently chosen topics include comparisons of various cultural rituals around
the dying process; palliative care and hospice; the impact of grief; current issues surrounding death
and technology; organ donation, coping with death from different development perspectives, etc.
Topics such as burial practices, forensics, or historical practices are also interesting. Just remember
that you will use these resources to create an informational brochure, so consider your intended
audience.
Format
1. Length. 4 pages that includes a title page (include your topic and intended audience for the
teaching project) and one page per source (there is no need to include a separate reference page
with an annotated bibliography.
2. Format. Use APA formatting. You no longer need a running head for student papers. You are
expected to thoroughly proofread for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. I
suggest that you submit your paper to a plagiarism checker prior to submission.
• Content. For each source, you will include the reference in APA format at the top of the page
(single space). Summarize the article: Describe the main points, for example,
purpose/audience/summary/results/possible biases, etc. Write in narrative form. You should
keep additional notes from the articles to use in the teaching project, but only summarize the
most pertinent information here in one page per article. Do not write in the third person
(sometimes the suggested style for an annotated bibliography, but not necessary here)

I settled on the impacts of grief in teens as my project because of different reasons. Millennial are largely turning to social media in a time of grief, which might not be a good and long-term solution. At this point, teens are undergoing other milestones search as puberty and social acceptance that might affect how they deal with grief. I find the topic useful to me because I had experienced grief at a time when I was grabbling with finding my identity and the other things that come with teenage hood. There is an urgent need to put in place a unique measure to enable us to deal with grief.

The purpose of the study was to examine the depth of grief and depression. The participant who experienced the loss of a sibling and those who lost a friend took part. One hundred and seven young adults of ages 17-29 years participated in the study carried out in 2013. Ursano (2014) reported that 81.3% of college students had lost an extended family member, while 60% have lost a friend. The authors suggest that the college-age majority of young adults have already experienced the death of a loved one or a friend. The percentage illustrates the high frequency of loss that continues to affect the performance of college students.
The study reported that the participants who lost a sibling experienced more complicated grief and depression than those that lost a friend. However, all the participants experienced a lower sense of self-meaningfulness and benevolence to the world. They also experienced an economic understanding of self-wort (Ursano et al. 2014). Bias is evident because of not considering the mode of death as a factor to determine the difference between the two. I believe that things the depth of grief and depression for a friend would be much higher if an accident occurred, and only one of them survived. The study is relevant for my project because it provides information on the impacts of grief on young adults. I can successfully implement most of the information contained in my teaching project.
