The Use of Clinical Systems to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies
Introduction
Inpatient electronic health records (EHRs) are digital systems that make patients' information available to authorized users in real-time. Indeed, the data is stored securely, and healthcare providers can retrieve it anytime when diagnosing or treating their patients. EHRs might constitute patients' medical histories, medications, treatment plans, laboratory test results, immunization dates, radiology images, and allergies. In particular, they are evidence-based that provide physicians with relevant information to facilitate their decision-making processes on the best treatment strategies. The primary purpose of this paper is to discuss how the internal EHRs facilitate quality patient care outcomes and efficiencies by reviewing four peer-reviewed sources in an annotated bibliography format.
Ballester, J. M. S., Bass, G. D., Urbani, R., Fala, G., Patel, R., Leri, D., Steinkamp, J. M., Denson, J. L., Rosin, R., Adusumalli, S., Hanson, C. W., Koppel, R., & Airan-Javia, S. (2021). A mobile, electronic health record-connected application for managing team workflows in inpatient care. Applied Clinical Informatics, 12(5), 1120-1134. DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1740256.
The primary aim of the researchers was to build, design, and implement an EHR system. In addition, the EHRs were put into use, and their efficiency and efficacy in managing physicians in inpatient care were measured. Agile development methodologies were used to design and build Carelign in 2016. Carelign was implemented in 152 out of 169 inpatient services in three hospitals with a total bed capacity of 1,616. The average weekly users were 3,275, with 26,981 access sessions (Ballester et al., 2021).
The outcome and efficiency of Carelign were measured to ascertain whether it was effective in inpatient care. The user-focused designed system was found to be the best in promoting the quality of patient care. In reality, the usage of the system increased with time since numerous physicians understood its benefits. Hospitals using Carelign admitted that they increased their workflow efficiencies and that patients were satisfied with the healthcare services they received from healthcare providers.
The most significant thing about this peer-reviewed article is that researchers witnessed an EHR system that was made as they observed and evaluated its effectiveness and efficiency. In most cases, managing teams in inpatient care are not easy without the use of an EHR system. Carelign improved workflow in inpatient care facilities since physicians were able to attend to their patient's needs without delay and knew where they were supposed to be at every specific time.
