Reading Outline guidelines
Goal: Reading philosophy is a skill that takes practice and technique. This tool helps you focus on the salient and important points of philosophical texts. Such a skill is important for understanding what you are reading as you go along (and for remembering it when you are done!).
Since the arguments are rarely presented upfront, most texts in require at least two or three reads: (1) a basic read to understand key terms and see why the author is making this argument; (2) then a quick skim to see the overall outline of the text and identify the most important passages, and (3) finally, a careful re-read of the key passages you identified. Your reading outline tool may focus either on the main argument of the passage as a whole, or on an important sub-argument presented in a key passage.
I encourage you to use this outline tool (or your personal equivalent) when taking notes on all of the readings. All answers should be in complete sentences.
I also encourage you to discuss the reading with your colleagues.
That said, if you choose to refer to outside sources, including your colleagues, you must include a reference section where you write down what sources you used. Using information from a website without citing it can be academically dishonest, and you risk failing the course. See the syllabus and Course Catalogue for more detail. Let me know if you have any questions. If you are unsure, it is better to ask me than risk being perceived as plagiarizing!
