Copper, Reisman, and Watson evaluate sign language instruction status in higher education institutions between 1994 and 2004. Based on their survey, it is evident that the instruction status has changed over time. More institutions allowed sign language for foreign language and general education requirements. Besides, in 2004, the faculty had more teaching and education experience. Full-time faculty indicated an increased proportion of the deaf and those who occupied tenure-track positions. Overall, sign language continues to gain more acceptance as a formal academic discipline. Hence, the prevalence and popularity of sign language programs in postsecondary facilities have increased significantly because such courses were implemented on campuses in the 1980s.
