The author, Rosen, evaluates the American Sign Language (ASL) curriculum to come up with multiple ideas. She begins by highlighting how ASL has developed in the last 20 years. In 1987, out of the 1650 secondary schools surveyed, only 1% offered the ASL curriculum. However, the number increased to 701 in 2005. There has also been an increase in curricular materials, making the model more effective and practical to learners. The curricular materials utilized by ASL instructors in secondary schools vary in terms of cultural information, grammar, vocabulary emphasis, topic selection, and forms of linguistic structures.
