Hester’s equilibrium seems to have given her peace. She now recollects her feminism and masculine and integrates them. The disturbance created at the start of the novel creates sympathy for Hester in myriad ways. As Hawthorne puts it, the introduction of the novel explores the theme of sin and how it is connected to knowledge and social order. There are symbols used in the intro, which also have the political reality of Hester Prynne's world, to testify to the contradictions given the puritan society (Al-Murib). The world seems to have already fallen where they already know sin, and the colonialists were quick to establish prisons and cemetery since they were aware that sin, misbehaviour and death were unavoidable. The beliefs were appropriate to puritan’s doctrine that emphasized much on the original transgression where all people are born sinners following Adam and Eve sin at the Garden of Eden.
The Disturbance at the Start of the Novel and how it Creates sympathy
The public gatherings at the prison and the scaffold also depict that Hester was going to live in a solemn society. The actions of exposing her to be punished publicly to be scorned by children and adults seem to show the opposite of what puritanism is. The sympathy is further heightened by the beadle when he calls for a blessing on the sunshine. The self-righteousness of the beadle entirely suggests that Hester’s punishment is fueled by the villagers who quest for moral virtue. In this view, sin is a lesson to both the sinner and act as an example for others, and in that case, it is not merely protecting the community but punishing the sinner. Hester here is made a scapegoat with the public nature of her penalty, making her an object of morbid.
The townspeople and more so the women are given a chance to demonstrate their piety by loudly condemning Hester. This action mainly shows that Hester will carry her cross to death. Instead of the townspeople viewing the sin as a reflection of their own, they see Hester as a person whose sins far outweigh and sanitize their transgressions. Hester is made a “living sermon,” by the townspeople as she is stripped off her humanity as a service to the community. The scarlet letter, “A” standing for adultery seems to have given Hester another name justifying her deeds (Al-Murib).
