Use the information on page 125 of your textbook (Table 5.2) to start your analysis of Pearl Arredondo’s life story, your own story if you have been affected by gangs, or someone you know. Then write a 4-6-page paper answering the following questions:
1.How was she able to rise above crime, delinquency, and gang life?
2.Identify at least four factors that you believe are important for one to understand the origins of the juvenile’s delinquent behavior.
3.What protective factors helped Pearl Arredondo (or the person in your own story)?
4.What risk factors did she face?
5.Apply at least two research-based early intervention programs described in Chapter 9 that Pearl Arredondo could use in the school program she created.

Gang violence has become a severe social problem in different states across the United States and other parts of the world. Additionally, young people are at high risk of getting recruited into youth gangs where they are involved in violent activities such as theft and drug trafficking. The gags increase fear in the neighborhoods, increase the crime rate, and result in a high school dropout rate among the young people. However, law enforcement agencies such as the FBI have been dedicated to disrupting the gangs through intelligence-driven investigations where there is timely sharing of information between the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
Various factors enabled Pearl Arredondo to rise above crime, delinquency, and gang life. Family is very important, and it is a building block of human society. Parental supervision and other aspects of the family can assist in preventing crime and delinquency. However, the absence of parental supervision and involvement can promote the development of crime in society. Home can be considered as a natural school for kids. Through interaction and bonding, parents can be able to teach children moral values that will shape their future. Howell & Griffiths (2018) asserts that parents who experience neglect and abuse are at greatest risk of becoming criminals in the future. For example, the acquired strong support from her mother and other individuals, including teachers who offered a system network that enabled her not to become a victim of her circumstances. The social support she was provided with was critical since it enabled Arredondo to think beyond what she thought she would achieve (Arredondo, 2013). Arredondo’s mother transferred her to a school far from home where she would acquire the needed support and where the community was not gang-infested. The support from Arredondo’s mother enabled her to graduate from high school.
Education played a very important role in assist Pearl Arredondo rise above crime. While at school, she was able to engage in different activities. According to Flores (2003), education can be used to curb crime and promote law and order in society. Engaging students in different activities equip students with skills that assist them in rising above crime and delinquency. Although the teachers were not optimistic about Pearl Arredondo, She was able to graduate. This shows how school played an important role in assisting Pearl Arredondo to rise above crime.
It is very important for people to understand why young people commit crimes. If these issues are addressed properly, better decisions can be made to help them change their ways in the future. If delinquency has occurred, addressing these factors can give children an opportunity to grow in a safe environment. There are several factors that can help in understanding the origin of juvenile delinquent behavior. For example, poor education standards may facilitate indiscipline and facilitate chaos as they act defensively because of their surroundings.
