First Responder Courts
Many first responders, including those in the correctional facilities and law enforcement, suffer from anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression, leading to numerous deaths from suicide. In particular, these individuals hold significant roles in society since they encounter mental challenges for being the first ones to arrive at the crime scene. In that light, the introduction of First Responder Courts is crucial to help these people cope with mental problems that come as an after-effect of their work.
First responders are police officers or other individuals who arrive first at the crime scene. These people are responsible for safeguarding the crime scene, saving people’s lives, and controlling the public to not tamper with the evidence left behind by perpetrators. Notably, first responders come across victims who have been injured, raped, or others die in their hands. They are likely to encounter traumatic events that might affect them adversely emotionally, psychologically, or physically (Monier, Henrion, & Andre, 2020). For instance, coming across a crime scene with a person who has been stabbed to death is not a good experience for anyone to watch. That is why these individuals need mental assistance, leading to the significance of First Responder Courts.
The First Responder Courts should be introduced, and their objectives would be similar to those of the veterans’ treatment courts. First responders encounter traumatic events when they are in the line of duty. For example, they come across victims of rape, dead people, and severely injured individuals. Similarly, soldiers come across numerous challenges, and others are forced to kill to survive. Since veteran treatment courts exist to provide mental assistance to former soldiers to recover from mental illnesses, such as depression, First Responder Courts should also be introduced to assist first responders in maintaining their mental health.
