Psychotherapy Modality of Choice
Introduction
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) play various roles in psychotherapy. First, they offer appropriate psychotherapeutic education to various persons/ groups. These include other medical professionals, families, and patients. Further, these professionals play a critical role in caring for patients with mental health issues. They have the ability to form strong bonds with patients and their families (Muench & Fraze, 2022). The formation of bonds is solely intended to offer effective psychotherapeutic treatment to patients. These practitioners also work closely with other health professionals to ensure that the patient receives the best possible care. This factor helps maximize positive patient outcomes. In addition to these critical roles, the PMHNP provider also plays a significant role in teaching patients about self-care activities. Self-care activities have been shown to significantly expedite patient recovery as well as maximize positive health outcomes. PMHNPs provide their services in a wide range of settings with the aim being provision of psychotherapeutic and medication management of mental health issues. These settings include government agencies, private practice, community health mental centers, and nursing homes.
Choice of Modality (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychotherapeutic treatment that focuses on helping clients/ patients identify unhelpful thought patterns that they might be harboring. After identifying them, the therapist assists the clients in forming helpful ways of thinking. Numerous scientific evidence has shown that this therapy significantly improves cognitive functioning and the quality of life (Kazantzis et al., 2018). Cognitive behavioral therapy is based on several principles. The first principle is that most psychological problems are partly influenced by unhelpful thought patterns. Experts using this therapy argue that thoughts significantly influence behavior. The observation is that positive thought patterns lead to positive behavior while negative thought patterns lead to negative behaviors.
The second principle observes that a large number of psychological problems are partly brought about by learning a pattern of unhelpful behaviors. There exists evidence to show that any learned behavior can potentially be unlearned and replaced by a new one. Cognitive behavioral therapists use this premise to assist the client change the unhelpful behavioral pattern by learning helpful ones. The third principle observes that persons with psychological problems have the potential to learn better ways of dealing with situations in life. If they learn these better ways, they can lead more quality lives. Numerous scientific evidence has shown that cognitive behavioral therapy is successful in helping deal with a wide variety of psychological disorders. Some of the areas that cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to shine are anxiety disorders, eating disorders, marital issues, and depression (Carpenter et al., 2018). This therapy is also used in helping individuals with alcohol and drug addiction problems.
