The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a professional association strategically designed to enhance healthy practices for medical-surgical nurses. AMSN brings together over 10,000 medical-surgical nurses who have a strong interest in enhancing patient care, growing both individually and professionally, advocating for change, and connecting with thousands of other nurses with similar compassion and commitment. AMSN has a mission, vision, and core values like other professional associations. AMSN's mission is to promote excellence in med-Surg nursing and has done this over the years through advocacy, certification, scholarship, and professional development (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, 2021). AMSN's vision is to use the powerful voice and action to enhance patient care continually. As a professional organization, its operations are guided by core values which include: (1) using evidence-based practices; (2) engaging in continuous professional development; (3) speaking and leading with unified voices; and (4) practicing in a healthy practice environment (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, 2021). Accordingly, nursing, especially in the medical-surgery department, is complicated, and as a result, nurses face challenges ranging from professional burnout and stress-related illnesses. Nurses in the medical-surgery sector are equally affected by burnout and are at risk of committing costly medical errors and other mistakes that can kill the reputation of a health facility. AMSN steps in many instances to ensure that nurses are better prepared to handle work-related pressure and develop professionally with the sole goal of promoting quality care.
AMSN Position in Creating a Healthy Practice Environment
AMSN has a position statement, and the position statement presents the association with a stand and philosophy to assess the obligation of nurses and employers in the overall wellbeing of medical surgery nurses. First, AMSN has to offer its members relevant education about self-care, wellbeing, and resilience in the medical space (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, 2021). Also, the professional association has continually built education and resources for its medical surgery nurses so that they are in a position to advance its members' knowledge and allow them to attain the necessary skills and tools necessary to excel in their professional setting. AMSN's also take the initiative to inform the relevant authorities on the negative effects of burnout and nurse bullying and nurses and what initiatives should be initiated to avert them.
Secondly, AMSN, as a professional association, continues to invest in research to understand the nurse's work environment and develop programs that address such issues.
