Problems in Finding Staff for Patients in the Long Term Care (LTC)
Shortage of nursing staff in the LTC is a significant challenge facing the United States of America (USA). The number of patients who need LTC services has been rapidly increasing, including the rising percentage of the elderly population. LTC facilities encounter various problems when trying to find talented, experienced, or highly skilled caregivers. First, the USA does not produce enough healthcare professionals who can offer LTC services. Besides, LTC services are broad since they include providing supportive services for individuals with chronic illnesses or older people (Harris-Kojetin et al., 2019). Second, LTC experiences high staff turnover rates, meaning that it is challenging for nursing homes to retain good-performing nurses. Third, many highly skilled licensed practical nurses (LPN) take management-level roles. Fourth, some well-trained caregivers in LTC are not motivated and are likely to shift their careers to other health-related fields. As such, LTC faces scarce professional development, and getting talented and highly experienced individuals ready to provide quality healthcare services is challenging.
Problems Likely to Occur with Patient Care When there is not Enough Staffing
When there is a shortage of staff in the LTC, numerous issues are likely to occur. For example, there are increased rates of nurse burnout. The few caregivers available in nursing homes in the USA work for long hours without resting so that they can try to meet their patients’ needs. In that light, they end up tired and unable to think rationally when making clinical decisions, which might put patients’ lives in danger (Ehrlich, McKenney, & Elkbuli, 2020). Another problem is the lack of quality patient care since a few nurses are expected to take care of many patients. Some patients prefer not to go to a nursing home even if they need supportive services since they will suffer more than when they are at home. In addition, the shortage of staff in LTC contributes to the inaccessibility of patient care for older people and those with chronic illnesses. From a nursing home perspective, a shortage of staff makes them unable to admit more patients. For instance, in November 2021, a 390-bed Terrace View, a nursing home in Buffalo shut down 22 beds since they were unable to get enough staff (Bernstein & Dam, 2021). Many states have specific requirements that healthcare professionals in the LTC must meet. For example, these individuals ought to be licensed and with some years of experience in the LTC field. Healthcare organizations, such as the American Nursing Association (ANA), states, federal, and local governments set the parameters for hiring staff in the LTC. As a result, individuals must meet all the requirements for them to be considered potential employees legally, professionally, and ethically.
