It is anticipated that the initial discussion response should be in the range of 250-300 words. Response posts must demonstrate topic knowledge and scholarly engagement with peers. This is not the only criteria utilized for evaluation; substantive content is imperative. All questions in the topic must be addressed. Classroom Participation
Students are expected to initially address the discussion question by Wednesday of each week. Participation in the discussion forums is expected with a minimum total of three (3) substantive postings (this includes your initial posting and posting to two peers) on three (3) different days per week. Substantive means that you add something new to the discussion, you aren’t just agreeing. This is also a time to ask questions or offer information surrounding the topic addressed by your peers. Personal experience is appropriate for a substantive discussion and should be correlated to the literature.
All discussion boards will be evaluated utilizing rubric criterion inclusive of content, analysis, collaboration, writing and APA. If you fail to post an initial discussion you will not receive these points, you may however post to your peers for partial credit following the guidelines above. Due to the nature of this type of assignment and the need for timely responses for initial posts and posting to peers, the Make-Up Coursework Policy (effective July 2017) does not apply to Discussion Board Participation.
Discussion Topic
In the Online Nursing Orientation resource module you were introduced to our graduate nursing certification success platform – the ‘3 Vs’ – ‘Vision, Value, Victory’. For those of you who also completed their graduate nursing theory and research courses in our program additional information was conveyed about our certification success framework.
Certification success thinking starts with your ‘vision’ to enter the program. Through the ‘3 Vs’ we hope to focus students’ thoughts about the ‘value’ that each course in the program brings to movement toward certification success. And ‘victory’ comes with success is achieved by success on planned certification exams.
Other ‘models’ that have the potential to impact your perspective on the ‘value’ of your course work have been provided for those of you who completed theory and research as a part of our program. Another model is examined in this course.
First utilized in the 1920s and often viewed as a model to view/guide process improvement model is the PDSA model (Plan, Do, Study, Act). The model parallels the tenants of action research in education and can be used to guide development of treatment plans for patients (or self) as well.
One of the aims of the ‘3 Vs’ is to convey how ‘models’ thinking contributes to the development of your critical decision making processes. Here we will apply the PDSA model to what may be an everyday circumstance. Our goal, however, is that you gain an understanding of the value of models and come to see them as a part of your everyday decision making rather than as nebulous ideology.

• From your review of the NCCIH website you know that about 30% of adults engage with health care modalities not typically considered part of the conventional medical care model.
• The likelihood exists that either you or someone you know has utilized complementary, alternative or integrative health care modalities.
• Reflect on one of those non-conventional modalities that you have experience with.
• Construct a discussion of that experience utilizing the PDSA model schemata.
• Support elements of the ‘Plan’ aspect with appropriate information from scholarly resources.
• Compare the ‘Study’ aspect with findings from scholarly resources.

Look at your course colleagues' PDSA model schemata.
• Review the ‘P’ and the ‘S’ of your course colleagues’ schemata from your advanced practice nursing role perspective – educator, leader or practitioner. From your advanced practice mindset reflect on a discussion you would like to have with two of your course colleagues about their schemata.
• Post a response individually to each of them that expresses your advanced practice nursing role perspective of the data represented in their schemata.
• Use scholarly resources relevant to your advanced practice nursing role to support the key elements of the peer discussions you construct. [For example - if you are a nurse educator (clinical or academic) what are your thoughts about their ability to follow task instructions for constructing the assignment, etc.?; if you a nurse leader what are your thoughts about the success of their application of a process improvement model, etc.?; if you are a nurse practitioner what are your observations about the non-conventional modality presented in the schemata, can you locate any evidence or basic sciences constructs that support the modality, etc.?
