Critical Decision Making For Providers
Case Overview
Mike, a lab technician, is running late for work; this is not the first time it is happening. He was already warned by his supervisor that he would be terminated if he comes late for work. Mike values his job because it is the source of his livelihood that supports his family. When Mike arrived at work, there is a spill on the floor at the reception lobby. Waiting for the spill to be cleared might cause a delay in clocking in; he risks losing his job. Mike is not responsible for cleaning up; he can wait for the people responsible for cleaning up the spill while he clocks in. Mike is contemplating on the best option concerning his situation.
Consequences of Failing To Report
Mike does not want to lose his job. The first option is to ignore the spill and clock in. Reporting the spill would mean spending more time on ensuring the spill is cleared. Calling his supervisor would mean explaining why he is late again. The supervisor might misinterpret his good intentions. On the other hand, failing to report about the spill will cause adverse effects especially on patients (Jorgensen, 2011). Mike is aware that one of his patients had fallen in the morning and was experiencing serious hip pains.
Failing to clean the spill can lead to another patient falling; this makes Mike feel guilty. The other dilemma facing Mike is whether to inform the supervisor about the situation. If he reports having ignored the spill owing to time constraints, he could be terminated due to negligence (Lockwood, 2015).
The Impact of Mike Decision
To report the spill is to ensure safety. The reporting will minimize the risk of another patient falling. Mike can inform his supervisor that he delayed in clocking in because he was clearing the spill. He can alternatively request to make up for the lost time before his shift ends that day. This would have saved other patients from falling again (Jones, 1991).
One patient was already suffering from serious pain as a result of falling earlier on. If another patient is injured, the facility would have to use extra resources to treat any injured patient. Injured patients might be incapacitated hence being a burden to the family (Lockwood,2015). By not cleaning the spill or not reporting the spill can result in legal consequences that can result to negative consequences for Mike and the hospital administration. Mike can lose his job and be deregistered by the professional body. This is because as part of the safety requirements, hospital environments should be free from any harm. All staff are expected to act ethically to ensure that the working environment is safe for everyone. Incase of any accident, the hospital quality standards will be questioned, and the patients’ trust for quality service will be ...
