Intimate Partner Violence
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been considered a major public health issue that claims millions of lives globally. It is also a major violation of fundamental human rights and causes severe mental and physical health consequences (Patra et al., 2018). Broken relations and families can also affect children. The focus of this paper will be on exploring signs of IPV, questions, actions to take during appointments, and resources available either for referral or provision of information to patients.
Signs of Possible IPV
Several elements can be used as possible warning signs of IPV. First, the use of physical aggression against a partner is usually the clearest sign of IPV. Such aggression includes hitting, slapping, or pushing a partner. Second, the intimate partner can become unpredictable as manifested through rapid and radical mood changes. Third, suspicion, anger, and jealousy, especially when there is no reason for such behavior, are other signs of potential IPV. Other aspects that a potentially violent partner tries to control is the money and financial decisions. This includes taking the partner's money without consent.
Besides physical abuse, verbal abuse or threats can also be an indicator of IPV, especially name-calling yelling, and swearing. Incidences of talking with a raised voice can also be considered signs of potential IPV. Violent partners may also isolate their partners through such actions as limiting time on the phone or limiting other sources of communication (Marques, 2018). This behavior may also extend to forcing their partners to stay at home. Other potential signs of IP include forcing partners to have sex, threatening a lot, or always blaming their partners. In terms of threats, it is important to emphasize that the potentially violent partner will threaten to hurt oneself, the partner, or the partner’s lover if they try to leave the relationship. This can be considered an extension of the controlling trait, where the violent individual seeks to be in control of even the feelings of their feelings.
Questions and Actions
Asking the right questions is considered the key to detecting possible cases of IPV. Some of these questions have been used by experts and scholars to develop screening tools for domestic violence. For example, the Women Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) is a two-question tool that can detect IPV. The first question asks the potential victim how they would describe their relationship. The boxes to tick are 1) no tension, 2) some tension, and 3) a lot of tension. The second question asks if the potential victim and his/her partn...
