Advocacy Against Violence and Abuse Paper
Introduction and Statistics
According to Kochanek et al. (2019), homicide accounts for almost 20,000 deaths in the United States (U.S.) every year and many more individuals are harmed by violence. Many individuals in the U.S. encounter sexual violence, physical assaults, and gun-associated injuries. Many vulnerable populations, including women and children, minority communities, and the elderly, are at a heightened risk of encountering abuse and violence. Vulnerable populations experiencing violence and abuse are susceptible to developing long-term behavioral, mental, and physical health problems. Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) play a central role in reducing the different types of abuse and violence to augment health outcomes and wellbeing in their community. PMHNPs should advocate for interventions tailored to reduce abuse and violence to keep vulnerable populations safe in their workplaces, schools, homes, and communities. Advocacy efforts to protect vulnerable populations from violence can help augment their health and wellbeing in the long term.
What are abuse and violence against others?
Abuse is when an individual inflicts distress or harm on another. It is categorized into different forms, ranging from disrespectful behavior to causing someone mental or physical pain. It can happen in someone’s home, healthcare facility, physical facility, or care home. Individuals who abuse others take advantage of their vulnerability or special relationship. They might be a family member, a paid caregiver, or a friend who is trusted. In some instances, abuse is not intentional, especially when it happens because the person lacks the competencies or support required to deliver the services (Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board, 2022). Violence against others refers to the intentional employment of physical power or force, actual or threatened, against another individual or a community or a specified group, that either leads to or potentiates a high probability of leading to psychological harm, injury, death, deprivation, or maldevelopment (Collins et al., 2021). Although violence can be self-directed, this report defines the concept via any form of physical, psychological, sexual, neglect, or deprivation actions directed at children, women, or elders.
Vulnerable Population: Pregnant Women and Children
Pregnant women are susceptible to experiencing domestic violence. Globally, 30 percent of women experience sexual or physical violence perpetrated by their partners in their lifetime. Pregnancy alone places considerable physical and psychological stress on a woman, and when combined with stress from other causes such as violence, they can negatively impact the healthcare of the mother and the child. In addition, complications can augment neonatal or maternal mortality. Domestic violence against pregnant women causes several adverse implications, including congenital infection, atraumatic rupture of the spleen, trauma to the unborn baby, prenatal bleeding, stillbirth, premature delivery, and abortion (Naghiz...
