Term Paper Instructions:

TERM PAPER ASSIGNMENT: THE CASE WILL BE PASSED OUT IN CLASS

APPLY THEORIES AND CASES FROM THE TEXT AND CLASS NOTES.  What set of theories from the course are you using to analyze the case?  Use these theories to provide a logical framework to discuss the case.  Are there any cases from the text or class lectures that are relevant to the case you are discussing?  Can you show how other managers from these cases have experienced similar problems?  Applying the course material is half the grade for the paper; the over half consists of discussing the case.

DIAGNOSE THE MAIN PROBLEMS.  What are the main problems in the case?  Your diagnosis should not only list the symptoms but also the underlying causes of the problems.  Use the theories you discuss to explain why the problems have come about.

MAKE SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS.  How would you solve the problems in the case?  Make sure your suggestions address the problems you have identified.  Your solutions should also be consistent with your general theoretical approach.  What have other corporations done to solve similar problems?

SUPPORT YOUR POINTS.  Support your points by referring to the facts of the case and to studies from the text and class.  Arrange your points logically and use general statements illustrating the principles involved as well as specific facts or points of information.  Do not use the first few pages to simply repeat what happened in the case.  Instead, use the facts from the case to support your diagnosis and proposed solutions.  Use frequent, short, and specific quotes to provide evidence to back up your arguments.

ORGANIZE YOUR PAPER.  Use standard writing techniques, such as providing an introductory paragraph that gives an overview of your paper.  Use your best grammar and sentence structure to make your paper convincing.

PROVIDE AN OUTLINE.  Include a detailed, one-page outline that briefly shows the problems and theories that you are discussing.  The outline should serve as the title page.  The outline is graded on quality.

LENGTH.  Your paper should be five to seven pages long when typed and doubled-spaced with 1 to 1.5 inch margins (The outline is not part of the 5-7 page limit).  Number all pages, starting with the first text page (i.e., do not count the outline as page 1).  Also, please do not use folders, and especially do not use plastic sheets with binders that fall apart.

DUE DATE.  See the course schedule for the due date.  Excessively late papers will be penalized (usually half a letter grade, depending on the number of days late).   One-week extensions may be granted due to sickness, family emergencies, work conflicts, etc.

INFORMED CONSENT.  The attached INFORMED CONSENT FORM must be "checked" and stapled to the back of your term paper.  Papers without the form will not be graded.

Leadership Styles: The Great Post-It Massacre
The case The Great Post-It Massacre presents the challenges associated with the different workplace management styles. The major issues arising from the case include the strengths and shortcomings of Laissez Faire and authoritative leadership styles in managing junior employees.
The Laissez Faire approach adopted by Beverly Sadowsky demonstrates the importance of delegating duties to junior employees and allowing them the freedom to complete the tasks in whichever way they see fit, as long as they achieve the desired results. In contrast, authoritative leadership places emphasis on following orders from above, whereby leaders go to great lengths to ensure that junior employees follow given instructions in completing assignments. This leadership approach is shown by George Fishman in his treatment of Bob Scanlan.
The two theories relevant to this case are the Equity Theory and Expectancy Theory. Equity theory states that employees “create a mental ledger of the outcomes they get from their job dutiesâ€Β (p. 176). This theory is exemplified by Bob's remuneration demands before agreeing to take up the job of am departmental supervisor. Concerned that the new role is a dead-end job with little chance for career growth, he demands higher pay to compensate for what he will miss out. Evidently, he considered the benefits that employees in other departments will get (such as career growth opportunities) and sought to compensate for it by asking for higher pay.
The expectancy theory is relevant as it portrays the aspects of self-efficacy in performing duties. Bob believes that exerting the right amount of effort will achieve results. In addition, he believes in his ability to perform assigned tasks independently.
Working under Beverly, Bob was able to apply his skills and knowledge to complete assignments. Be...
