 Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was born in Ansfelden in Austria (Watson). His father was a school teacher, and to continue the family tradition, he wished his son was for Bruckner to receive musical education like other teachers at the time. Most German-speaking composers were from Germany, and Bruckner was one of the few Austrian composers.

Bruckner's style was influenced by Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner’s music. Austria formed the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a monarchy in 1867 and the empire collapsed during WWI. Richard Wagner deaths in 1883 also influenced Wagner’s death music as Wagner was the most influential classical composer.

Bruckner’s performances and improvisations on the organ make him one of the unique composers in the 19th century, but a major part of his compositions was transcribed and has not been preserved. The composer came from a poor and religious family. Bruckner was self-taught. His first work was a requiem mass in 1849. With deep religious convictions, in 1851, he began his work as an organist at the St. Florian Monastery and later at the Linz Cathedral. Bruckner's scales are unusually long and his symphony cycles are some of his most well-known works. However, his cycle is less varied than those of other well-known 19th century classical composers. Bruckner is known for his sacred music and symphonies where his experience influenced his composition style.
