The rate of crime in Africa is very alarming. In 2012, 31% of global homicides occurred in Africa (Kalunta-Crumpton & Agozino, 2017). This is an indication that crime in Africa is a huge problem that has affected the livelihoods of many Africans. Statistics indicate that crime rate has been increasing in Africa over the years. Since 2004, the Eastern Africa region, particularly in Kenya and Uganda, crime has been on the rise (Kalunta-Crumpton & Agozino, 2017). The Sub-Saharan region has reported increased rates of crime since 2014. In 2014, for example, Nigeria reported 9% of armed conflicts in Africa (Ceccato & Newton, 2015). Lack of education (illiteracy) and unemployment are leading factors contributing to the increase of crime in the African region.
Lack of proper education is a leading cause of crime in Africa. Illiteracy pushes people to a life of poverty, thus resulting to criminal activities. In most African countries, literacy levels are below 50%, thus forcing many young people to engage in criminal activities (UNESCO, 2017). Lack of education denies people the opportunity to be economically endowed and also denies them the capacity to grow intellectually. Therefore, most illiterate members of public find themselves engaged in criminal activities to sustain their lives.
