In a hero or villain narrative, the continuation of pain that accompanies the protagonist emanates from his inherent weaknesses. Oedipus the King offers a typical example of just how character play can bring out various themes. The play is a tragedy, depicting the complex family connections between characters, which at the end of it result in death.
