Justice Approach on Abortion
The guiding question in this scenario is, what is the alternative approach to ethics that can help address the question of whether abortion should be legalized or not? In responding to this guiding question, I will take the approach of how a relativist account of moral value can influence how we view the question. According to relativists, the truth, right or wrong, can only be determined based on other things. Thus, it implies that no single action can always be considered right or wrong in all situations, as some cases are bound to see the scenario differently. The justice approach is one of the alternative approaches that one can implement to address the issue. According to the utilitarian approach, the government should legalize abortion if the action makes more people happy. On the other hand, the Kantian theory would consider abortion as being illegal because the action is not motivated by a sense of goodwill or the notion of the categorical imperative. Justice theory would also consider abortion illegal because the act is unfair since the unborn child is discriminated against.
According to utilitarianism, an action is only considered correct if it results in happiness and wrong if it results in sadness. The utilitarianism approach aims at maximizing the overall satisfaction of every person involved. This leads to the conclusion that abortion makes more people happy, including the mother, the mother’s parent, and society, and only makes the child unhappy and, therefore, should be made legal.
On the other hand, the Kantian theory is based on the argument that it is impossible to have something in the world that is right or wrong. The Kantian theory considers the action illegal because it goes against the categorical imperative and goodwill rule since the unborn child is considered human, and the action leads to death. Instead of killing the child, a goodwill action should be aimed at protecting the child’s life.
