Advantages and Disadvantages of Using E-Cigarettes
Replying to a discussion post.
E-cigarettes were not initially regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a tobacco product and therefore did not have any regulations on age restrictions for selling (Johnson & Selekman, 2019). The marketing strategy was geared towards e-cigarettes being a better and safer option as compared to smoking a conventional cigarette (Curran et al., 2018). In 2016, the FDA started regulating e-cigarettes, their ingredients and potential harmful effects (Curran et al., 2018). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of June 30th 2022, all 50 states have passed a legislation that bans the sale of e-cigarettes to underaged persons (CDC, 2022a).
Although there are current age restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes, adolescents still find ways to access them. Some adolescents borrow devices from their friends or purchase them online (Pepper et al., 2019). There is a higher rate of adolescent e-cigarette use as compared to cigarettes due to the appealing factor of multiple flavor choices that are added to e-cigarettes (Johnson & Selekman, 2019). E-cigarettes often produce the smell of its flavor and its odor can be easier to mask as compared to the conventional cigarette (Johnson & Selekman, 2019). This may make it easier to hide e-cigarette use from parents and schools.
Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a harmful chemical that can harm the developing adolescent brain (CDC, 2022b). E-cigarette use during this age has also been linked to increase the potential for addiction to other harmful drugs (CDC, 2022b). According to a study conducted by Curran et al. (2018), students who reported inhaled tobacco use such as cigarettes and e-cigarettes were more likely to also report past or current use of alcohol, marijuana and misuse of prescription drugs than students who did not use inhaled tobacco products. Psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety and stress have been found to increase the likelihood of smoking (Johnson & Selekman, 2019).

I love that you have highlighted the regulation of e-cigarettes and the legislation banning the sale of e-cigarettes to youths. As Johnson and Selekman (2019) indicate, the restriction of e-cigarette sales to youths is informed by the impact of nicotine on the development of the young brain. However, beyond the effects of the nicotine found in e-cigarettes, there are other risks associated with e-cigarettes. For instance, e-cigarette lithium-ion batteries can explode and injure users (Johnson &Selekman, 2019). I wonder whether the existing legislation covers these risks. Even though students are not supposed to use e-cigarettes, who should be held responsible if an e-cigarette battery explodes, injuring the student(s)? Are there laws around this specific risk?
I agree with your discussion about the role of e-cigarettes in increasing the potential for addiction to other drugs. In particular, e-cigarettes have been considered gateway drugs, increasing dependence on other drugs. For example, Wong et al. (2020) found that e-cigarette contributes to marijuana re-initiation. Although their findings were specific to marijuana, they raise a vital hypothesis that calls for more research. School nurses can fill this research gap to provide insights into the gat...
