Statesmanship: Literature Review
Introduction
Leaders who embraced statesmanship in history have been shown to have impacted the society positively. Statesmanship ensures that leaders call forth the virtues for good leadership in all their followers. Through this, leaders have overcome a great deal of hardship issues. Statesmanship is anchored on moral character, prudential wisdom, and humility, among other attributes focused on the realization of a good society. This literature review is aimed at exploring the existing research on statesmanship, including the definition, attributes, comparison of the attributes, and its impacts.[Terry Newell, Statesmanship, Character, and Leadership in America. (Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), 188.]
Defining Statesmanship
Statesmanship is a character that brings substantial difference in society when embraced by leaders. Being a moral character by a leader, statesmanship involves prudential judgment in calling forth the moral character of a nation, amidst personal risk and opposition, to achieve an important element that translates to a good society in the long-run. Statesmanship is a great skill that entails actions to serve moral ends. Though leadership and statesmanship may be mistakenly taken to mean the same thing, they are different. However, both share similar qualities but attention to character is only unique to statesmanship. Besides, statesmanship actions are anchored on moral ends, a quality that does not necessarily define leadership.[Newell, 186.] [Kahlib Fischer, "Leadership & Statesmanship. An Introduction." (2012): 4.] [John Gueguen, "Reflections on Statesmanship and the Presidency." Presidential Studies Quarterly (1982): 471.]
Attributes of Statesmanship
A leader who embraces statesmanship encourages the followers to uphold moral character. This is exemplified by Lincoln’s utterance: "…malice toward none; with charity for all," when he was encouraging the whole nation to stand for moral courage. Statesmanship is aimed at achievement of moral character in the whole society. This is enabled by wisdom which must be unique from that possessed by intellectuals or scientists. Hoy (1958) refers to this as practical or prudential wisdom that is necessary for statesmanship to succeed in the political arena. He further states that this wisdom can only be acquired by long apprenticeship and experience but not technical, scientific or academic training. Prudential statesmanship is borne of this kind of wisdom enabling one to combine wisdom and judgment in dealing with practical matters.[Newell, 186.] [Terry Hoy, "The idea of prudential wisdom in politics." The Western Political Quarterly (1958): 243.]
Statesmen such as Truman valued the quality of prudential wisdom especially in the practice of containment. Coffey (1985) argues that Truman was American president who valued practicality in dealing with specific issues. For example, he established priority in dealing with European matters over Asia. Statesmen’ value of practicality in dealing with matters is derived from the need to realize a good society. ...
