Heartbreak of Betrayal
In The Cask of Amontillado, Montressor recounts how he misleads his friend Fortunato into a trap that would be his death. The narrator is on record confessing how the act was not spontaneous and had planned it much prior. A theme of heartache and betrayal is evident because Montressor played on Fortunato's weakness which was pride. Beforehand, nobody could exploit this weakness until Montressor posed himself as a friend to an unsuspecting Fortunato. The writer shows this theme by allowing Montressor to be the narrator and telling the short story from his perspective. Consequently, by looking at Montressor's foul and cunning mind, the readers understand how a powerful man such as Fortunato can be led into a trap CITATION Whi \l 1033 (White).
The story's plot shows how the situation evolved from insults, holding grudges, and ultimately premeditated murder. As a close friend, Montressor knew that Fortunato would be drunk at the height of the carnival. He is also aware of the once-in-a-year opportunity to wear a mask to avoid drawing any suspicion. Montressor's narration shows that his plan was nearly impossible without gaining the friendship of Fortunato. Consequently, he commits the perfect crime by using Fortunato's company against him.
Heartbreak of betrayal in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor is personal. The Grandmother is fond of indiscriminately labeling everything as good, consequently diluting the meaning of a good man. This form of belief system allows the Grandmother to act out of self-interest, which brings about an entitlement to be viewed. She rarely pays attention to religion, Grace, or the aspect of right and wrong. This disregard for moral thought compounds her already present insensitivity towards real life, leading to her death CITATION Lit \l 1033 (LitCharts).
Her way of life betrays her in a world full of violence and where Grace is hard to come by. She lives a banal and petty life up until her mortality is threatened. In the face of death, she comes back to reality and encounters a moment of Grace; however, it is too late. In Christianity, Grace refers to God's unearned favor; however, according to O'Connor's story, Grace is the moment of truth that is beautiful and divine in nature CITATION Bar05 \l 1033 (Barnes). It is more like an epiphany that can pierce through the harshness or pettiness of life, such as the one portrayed by O'Connor.
The Grandmother lives in a world full of suffering violence and death; however, her banality propels her to live a life of self-int...
