External and Internal Environments of Nike
Understanding the external and internal environments of a firm is helpful to evaluate what needs to change and implement strategies to promote competitiveness. Internal environments are specific to Nike and include its strengths and weaknesses as they reflect its internal factors. There is an analysis of the external and internal environments of Nike.
General Environment
The general environment relates to the factors that affect society, industry, and firms, and the general environment dimensions influence the success of a brand. Companies cannot control the general environment, but recognizing the trends and strategizing based on predictions of the trends is helpful (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2020). The external influences factors and conditions analyzed for Nike are the demographic segment and technological segment.
Demographic segment
When considering demographic segmentation, there is an assumption that people in the same demographic group share similar needs. The demographic segment includes the population size, gender, ethnic mix, religion, age structure, geographic distribution, income, and occupation (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2020). Nike remains the biggest athletic footwear and apparel in the US, but there has been growing competition (Araujo, Caldwell & DeFanti, 2018). There are also cheaper and sometimes imitations from China that offer good quality shoes. Nonetheless, it is more challenging for new entrants to penetrate the sports industry where the target customers trust the recognizable brands. To remain competitive, Nike has focused on innovation to make the products unique, and there is a wide distribution network with many components from low labor markets in Asia.
