The video “Manager’s Hot Seat” depicts how cultural differences can affect business relationships adversely. In particular, a contract cannot be signed between two companies if their representatives do not understand each other’s cultural values and beliefs. Norio Tokunaka, the vice president (VP) of merchandise from a Japanese company, visited New York to finalize a business deal with a firm called Mustang Jeans (“Manager’s Hot Seat,” n.d.). Unfortunately, he did not meet Rogers, a sales manager he had developed a trusting business relationship with, and instead, he met Michael Sokolow. Sokolow did not understand how to handle Tokunaka well so that he can close the deal. He did not give proper attention to the VP of merchandise, which made him slightly offended and not to sign the contract even after arranging for a second meeting.

The primary players in the “Manager’s Hot Seat” are Tokunaka and Sokolow. Tokunaka travelled from Japan to New York to finalize a business deal he had initiated with Rogers, who was the former sales manager of Mustang Jeans. However, he found a new sales manager who failed to give him the attention he needed so that he can sign the contract. Notably, the two individuals had cultural clashes. Sokolow did not devote his time to know Tokunaka, and he kept repeating that he was busy. He only pushed the VP of merchandise to sign the contract since it appeared to be the most significant thing for him and his company.

Sokolow made some mistakes that hindered him from closing the deal with Tokunaka. First, he did not give his client enough time to talk about his favorite things and kept interfering with his speech. At some point, Tokunaka closed his eyes when Sokolow disrupted him while talking about food types that Rogers liked the most (“Manager’s Hot Seat,” n.d.). Second, Sokolow did not look for ways to develop a trusting relationship with Tokunaka, particularly since it was his first time to meet him.
