Standard Switches
Standard switches work like an Ethernet switch. They work with one Elastic Sky X integrated (ESXi) host only. One would use them to access network in hosts and virtual machines (Troy & Helmke, 2012). Standard switches also bridge traffic internally between virtual machines in a virtual local area network (VLAN) (Troy & Helmke, 2012). These switches identify the virtual machines connected to their virtual ports and use that information to forward traffic to the appropriate virtual machines (Troy & Helmke, 2012).
Distributed Switches
Distributed switches allow multiple ESXi hosts to use a single virtual switch, provided they exist within the same host cluster. They can be used to provide centralized monitoring and management of the network configuration of all ESXi hosts (Pettit et al., 2010). For example, in a data center, these switches handle the networking configuration of multiple hosts from a central place at a time.
