Homelessness in Newyork
Introduction
Homelessness is a severe issue that affects many New York City residents annually. The American Heritage Dictionary defines "homelessness" as the condition of being without shelter. According to a 2020 Invisible People weekly article titled "Why are people homeless in America," New Yorkers become homeless when their salaries and income are insufficient to pay their rent or mortgage, as well as other essentials like food, medication, health care, transportation, and childcare. The report claims that homeless persons in New York reside in hotels, domestic violence shelters, and emergency shelters. They also spend short periods living with friends and family in automobiles, tent encampments, parks, campsites, and woodlands, and living under bridges, streets, and sidewalks. The article highlights other key historical events that have contributed to the causes of homelessness, including the great recession and the COVID 19 epidemic (Invisible People, 2020). Homelessness resulted from many individuals defaulting on their mortgages during the Great Recession of 2007–2009 and from an increase in foreclosures, evictions, and unemployment. ‘The State of Homelessness As Covid Recedes In New York City’ article published on July 13, 2021, claims that the COVID-19 epidemic has increased homelessness. Due to sickness and taking care of ailing family members, some have lost their careers. They are in danger of being homeless because they cannot pay their rent or mortgage.
Causes of Homelessness in Newyork
According to a 2020 Invisible People weekly article titled "Why are people homeless in America," numerous factors influence how individuals become homeless, who becomes homeless, and for how long, as well as the difficulties that must be faced to achieve and sustain stability. Due to the high cost of housing, inadequate earnings, and rise in mentally ill homeless people, the United States has more recently been facing an affordable housing problem (Invisible People, 2020). Newyork is experiencing sky-rocked housing costs, making it hard for the residents to afford decent housing, with others opting to be out on the streets. With rising unemployment rates, it means that the residents are not able to afford housing. A report by the Newyork post named 'We must make NYC more accountable on the homeless and mentally ill' published in May 2022, indicated that the largest number of homeless people in new york has some mental illness (Newyork post, 2022).
Statistics of Homeless People in Newyork
At the beginning of July 2021, the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York reported that there were 47,045 persons in the city's shelter system, 16,981 homeless single adults, and 9,000 homeless people were staying in temporary hotel emergency shelters (Catholic Charities, 2021). The Coalition for the Homeless, founded in March 2020, said that when the epidemic struck New York City, over 61,000 New Yorkers slept in Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters. Many more were sleeping on the streets and in various agency-run shelters.
