Overview:The last unit of our semester will focus on research and the research process. Remember the academic research process is an 8-step sequence that is carried out on stages.

Directions: Start formulating your ideas for steps 1-4 of the research process. The topic you will use for your research is:  social media. 
Step one-Define the problem: This is the brain storming stage of the process. The question below is designed for you to gain ideas and insights regarding issues with social media. This should help you narrow your topic. 
Question #1:How does social media impact our daily life? You can explore the psychological, biological, global, and/or cultural impacts. This can include relationships, mental health, body image, bullying, globalization, generational relationships (such as boomers and millennials), consumerism, influencing trends, social activism, trade, voting patterns…. And so much more. There really are several ways social media impacts life. Please start to formulate a specific problem you’d like to know more about and discuss it in at LEAST 5 sentences.
Step 2- Reviewing the Literature:  This step helps you to understand how other people, mainly experts, view the problem. The next questions will introduce you to differing perspectives on the impacts social media and online presence makes. Please watch all four TED talks and answer the questions about them. This should help you start to formulate how you will approach your research and what you intend to explore in your research.

According to the TED speakers, what are the positive impacts social media has on influencing trends and social movements. According to them, why is social media unique compared to other forms of media?  How can social media bring forth change and activism? Can you think of any current social events or problems that could benefit from social media exposure? Explain these questions in 5-7 sentences.
Question #3Watch the follow TED talk:TED talk #3What does the TED speaker compare online life to? Why does he use this metaphor or comparison and what does he suggest about the permanence of a person's online “self” ? What are some of the negative impacts social media, avatars, and online profiles have on a person according to the TED speaker? How can our online presence propose problems for us economically, socially, or psychologically? Explore the critical and negative impacts online presence can have on a person’s modern life and be specific.Write at least 5-7 sentences.
Question #4Watch the TED talk:TED talk #4According to the speaker who steers the thoughts of billions of people today? How is this done and why is it done? Why according to the speaker are companies competing for our attention? What is the best way to get people’s attention according to the speaker? What are some of the psychological techniques that online companies use? What do you think are some of the psychological impacts online use and social media have on how we think and how we pay attention. How will this change the way we connect, communicate and relate to one another on a human level? Write 5-7 sentences. 
 Step 3- Pick your research design ( I did this step for you):  Your research design is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.
Step four- make a hypothesis/ thesis: This is when you narrow your ideas down to a specific and clear claim of truth about social media that you will attempt to prove TRUE in your research by gathering evidence and data. Question #5  Social media is defined as: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. For this step list THREE issues or problems you know about regarding social media. This can include: cultural, global, familial, societal, economical, emotional, psychological, and so one... this means you can narrow it down to even more specific categories such as how social media impacts relationships, self esteem, activism, health, and so on... the more specific, the better.
Question #6  Now PICK ONE topic or problem from the above list and make a QUESTION about it. For example: Does social media increase depression among American teens?  Next write a 5-7 sentence paragraph trying to answer that question based on what you already know to be true. You may use personal examples for this, BUT you may NOT use personal examples on your final assignment. You can also use common knowledge, your observations, anything you've read or watched about your topic and other people's experience. Try to flush out everything you know to be true about your topic choice and question.

Step One: Define the problem.
Question 1. Nowadays, people spend many hours to project their lives on social media positively and as beautifully as possible, thereby positively or negatively impacting the mental health of the user. Most of the social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, have been considered as an acceptable form of communication. The effects of using these platforms on every person vary. Notably, the outcomes are primarily influenced by their environment. Some say that it has a positive impact on their mental health because it allows them to be recognized despite lacking the qualities that they believe are essential to be recognized in society. In fact, many support groups use the technology to promote their advocacies online and to spread information to help acknowledge their groups and appreciate the perspectives and experiences of their members worldwide through social media platforms (Gkotsis et al. 64). By contrast, other users believe otherwise. Their sentiments are directed toward the adverse effects of the use of social media, such as in cyberbullying (Xu et al. 658).
Step Two: Reviewing the Literature.
Question 2. Ohanian, on Ted Talk, discusses how social media influences social movement. His example was how Greenpeace promoted the protection of whales by having online users or their audience vote on the name to be given to their adopted whale. Here, photos of the movement and the adopted whale circulated online, thereby encourage other people to protect the marine animal kingdom (Ohanian). Social media is unique because it uses all types of media in just one platform, and the audience defines its popularity. Thus, when the audience finds one topic attractive, whether it is just propaganda or not, or whether it is about social activism or not, the audience easily takes the information in (Alloca). An example of this is when the Greenpeace trend on naming the whale became popular to the audience, thereby leading to the establishment of branded clothes that utilize the advocacy of the group (Ohanian). One of the most phenomenal topics that could benefit from social media is raising female reproductive health awareness because this is often neglected in many countries, especially to those with more conservative cultures.
Question 3. Enriquez compares online life to a tattoo because tattoos illustrate information in who and what a person is by expressing oneself (i.e., beauty, serious mistakes, and intimacy). He uses tattoos as a metaphor for electronic tattoos, which are formed from facial recognition, emphasizing that these data can be used continuously, even after the death of our physical body. The significant negative impact of online presence in a person's modern life is the lack of security, and this will remain forever, thereby resulting in the lack of freedom because the technology allows you to be recognized anywhere you go.
