Problems and Solutions in Majoring in Multidisciplinary Studies

Research Paper Instructions:

Assignment:
For this paper, you will research a controversy or a problem in your field of study and write a 4-6 page essay that explains the problem to a student in a different field. If you are focusing on a problem, you will explain the causes of the problem as well as the proposed solutions. If you are focusing on a controversy, you will explain all “sides” of the issue. You may use brief quotes from reliable sources, but the majority of the paper should be summarized or paraphrased information that is cited correctly. A successful essay will synthesize sources and present the issue with a clear and logical structure.
Getting Started:
First, you will identify a controversy or problem in your field. You will explain the basic issue, and then expand upon the reason it has been problematized or considered controversial. To do this, you will need to reference reliable sources to explain the issue. Keep in mind that these academic sources are often only easily understood by those in the field of the author. So, it is up to you to balance summaries and quotations of these expert sources with your own explanations that would make sense to your target audience: another freshman college student in a different field.
Next (depending on your topic), you will either identify solutions to the problem, or explain the different “sides” in the controversy. Keep in mind that controversies and problems are ‘messy’ and solutions or stances often overlap. You will again reference reliable academic sources, but it is up to you to identify areas in which the sources are in agreement, overlap in areas, or are in disagreement.
Finally, include a section in which you personally evaluate the causes of the problem as well as the proposed solution (or different sides of the controversy). Remember, you should remain as objective as possible. This is not a time to identify your stance on a topic. Instead, you should use this space to evaluate the value of each stance or solution, as well as the sources you chose. You may identify an area that needs more research, point out another option, or offer a combination of approaches as a solution. You may not use “I” language. You should remain in the third-person point of view throughout the essay.
Remember, although this paper will include a summary of a controversy or problem in your field, the main focus of your paper should be describing the various dimensions of the problem by incorporating and explaining academic sources.
Requirements:
• At least 5 peer-reviewed sources (other good sources may be used in addition to the 5)
• 4-6 pages in length
• Topic that addresses a controversy OR a problem in your field.
• Strong thesis
• Clear topic sentences that help your reader move logically through your paper.
• Proper MLA formatting, including in-text citations and works cited page

Problems in Majoring In multidisciplinary studies
Background
Multidisciplinary studies integrate approaches from two or more disciplines, and it is more impactful when there is a connection between the different disciplines. Even though multidisciplinary studies may appear one to best positioned to work in a variety of jobs than a standard major, there are disadvantages. In the workplace, there are increasingly diverse teams with people from various academic and professional backgrounds. There should be a clear objective and coherence in multidisciplinary studies to learn and benefit from the multidisciplinary approaches. The failure in making connections between multiple disciplines is a barrier to multidisciplinary studies and research. Improving education and training, encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration, and a good understanding of the disciplines in multidisciplinary studies would bridge the gap between the disciplines.
Problems
Weak connections between multiple disciplines make it more difficult to utilize coherent frameworks and have a sense of purpose. Multidisciplinary studies approach research subjects from an interdisciplinary approach and connect two or more disciplines. In reality, connecting the disciplines does not necessarily benefit learners when there are uncertainties on integrating concepts and learning from multidisciplinary studies (Sievanen, Campbell and Leslie, 513). In any case, most researchers are more comfortable with a particular disciplinary focus that they are familiar with and utilize. Accommodating different disciplines and focusing on multidisciplinary studies would go a long way in improving learning but would not necessarily make it easier to investigate the subject more in-depth.
Difficulties in bridging the gap between different disciplines and connecting may affect the quality of research work and training. The quality of the research of multidisciplinary studies may also seem inferior to standard majors with coherent and well-established concepts. There may be heavy reliance on one discipline more than the others to the extent that only specific research approaches, theoretical, conceptual frameworks, and elements are preferred. In such cases, there is a possibility of there being bias towards a discipline in teaching and research, and the students then would have more training in one field. Yet, it is expected that there ought to be an integration of elements from various studies.
Solutions
Improving education and training where there is an emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and improving competence is necessary to bridge the gaps in multidisciplinary studies. At times, multidisciplinary studies are disjointed as there is poor training of the instructors and teachers who are then not well prepared to encourage and inspire students to learn and research subjects more in-depth. Insufficient training and exposure to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies affect people’s perception and competence (Hein 3).
