Research Paper Instructions:

Hi :) The main instructions are in the scanned images. I have included other instructions as well and I have more instructions if needed. Just let me know if you need additional information. I have chosen Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" for the researched essay. http://www(dot)vcu(dot)edu/engweb/webtexts/hour/
There are other options for the topic if necessary.
You are free to choose the writing approach you like from the scanned instructions. Just don't go too much over the top. This is supposed to be my first researched essay. So it shouldn't be overly professional. But don't be to concerned about this because I will look over it and put my touch to it.
Please contact me a to let me know that everything is clear to you and to give me an idea of the working thesis statement.
Also, I will list 2 discussion questions that need to be answered at some point. These 2 questions are directly related to the essay. Here they are:
Research Topic and Working Thesis
Post information about the topic of your research. Your posting and comments should address the following:
your potential thesis statement in bold
the reason you have chosen the topic for your research paper
the interest you have in the subject matter
any discoveries you have made about your topic through your research so far
The thesis statement you include here is a “working thesis”; you may find that you change and refine it as you continue to work on your researched essay. A good thesis is usually in third person (no “I” or “you”), is a statement (not a question), and tells the reader the main points you are claiming in your paper. Click HERE for more on thesis statements.
Thesis Statement and Working Bibliography
First, in bold, write your updated thesis statement for your researched essay.
Next, list at least three academic sources that you plan to use for your researched essay. Compose them as though they are entries in a Works Cited page. Make certain that they are listed in alphabetical order and use correct MLA format. Below is an example of a working bibliography:
Goldman, Marlene. "Penning in the Bodies: The Construction of Gendered Subjects In Alice Munro's Boys and Girls." Studies in Canadian Literature / Études en littérature canadienne [Online], 15.1 (1990): n. pg. Web. 23 Nov. 2013.
Jones, Michelle. "Boys And Girls." Masterplots II: Short Story Series, Revised Edition (2004): 1-2. Literary Reference Center. Web. 22 Nov. 2013.
Prabhakar, M., and K. Venkat Satish. "Alice Munro's Stories and Feminism." Cyber Literature. 4.1 (2011): 57-61. Web. 23 Nov. 2013.
You can go to the Purdue OWL to find a more detailed discussion of creating a bibliography for research.
Also, you may or may not find this helpful:
Writing the Research Essay
The research paper is your opportunity to enter more fully into the conversation that surrounds your topic. A research paper is not a broad summary of research or overview of various elements in the literature being researched. For that reason, it is crucial that you narrow your topic and focus your research on one aspect of the work. As you consider your sources in light of your narrowed topic, you may rely on the following questions as prompts:
Do you agree or disagree with the other scholars?
What do you agree with or disagree with in their research?
What claim* (See URL) might you make?
What are your reasons for the claim?
What evidence from the text would you provide?
A humanities-based research paper often follows this format:
Introduction, which should include your thesis
Literature review, which should include a look at some of the scholarship surrounding the literary work and a brief summary of the literary work itself
Writer's argument, which is the body of your essay wherein you seek to persuade your readers to see something about the literary text or to see it in a certain way
Result or Summation, in which you deliver your readers a final word concerning your study of the literary work at hand
If you have not done so already, write your claim, reasons and evidence now. Your claim and reasons will function as the thesis of your paper. The evidence you use to support your argument will be selections from the text and the scholarly sources in the bibliography.
Please don't forget to email me, if only to let me know whats going on. Thanks!

Death as a Symbol of Freedom from Male Domination in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”
Since time immemorial, society has functioned under a set of rules, norms and customs that guide the behavior of its members. No norm system has been more influential, however, than patriarchy in determining gender relations between males and females. Patriarchal ideologies are responsible for the gender power relations that exist today between men and women. For instance, women were taught and expected to submit to male authority. The popular idea that a man should be the head and breadwinner of the family has reinforced this submission by making wives to look up to their husbands for protection and provision of the family’s daily needs. The ideology has survived over the ages, shaping many societies’ understanding and organization of the family. By recognizing the man as the head of the family, patriarchy has contributed to the domination women in society. Even from an early age in many traditional societies, the girl child is prepared to play a subordinate role by being denied equal access to education as the boy child. Consequently, she ends up becoming a housewife as she lacks the educational skills to participate in the economical and political spheres. Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Story of an Hour,” is a portrayal of this patriarchal domination of women in society. Chopin writes about the suppression of women’s rights and freedoms in a male dominated society. With reference to Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour,” this essay argues that the “death” of Louis’ husband symbolizes her freedom and liberation from male domination.
The story’s heroine, Louise, has been living under the shadow of her husband in all the years of her marriage. While alone in her room after receiving the news of her husband’s death, she rejoices that “there would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature” (Chopin par. 12). The “powerful will” refers to the authority of her husband that she has been living under, and she is happy that this power has been removed. The idea of there being a powerful will bending hers implies the psychological and intellectual domination o women by men.
Psychologically, women are taught to respect and submit to the authority of their husbands. It is a popular belief that a good wife should not defy, argue with or show disrespect to her husband. In the pretence of teaching women to be good wives, society transforms them into submissive creatures who cannot speak for themselves. Not surprisingly, Louis is uncomfortable to accept, even to herself, that the death of her husband and the freedom it signifies is good for her. She has been conditioned to believe that a woman must have a man to look up to. Thus, she suppresses the joy that is erupting within her. Chopin writes that something exciting that made Louise’s bosom rise and fall “tumultuously” was coming to her, “and she was striving to beat it back with her will” (par. 1...
