Now that you have done some self-assessments and feel more confident about your achievements and strengths, it’s time to do your market research.

 

Background

Researching the market will help you understand the market segment you are interested in for your career.  You will use a systematic and targeted networking process to help you define your key strengths for the market and where your best opportunities lie.  The market intelligence you gain will help you see connections between the needs of the marketplace and your capabilities, that is, to describe the match between the buyer (a potential employer) and the seller (you).

Gathering market intelligence is a three-step process (Right Management Associates, 2004).

You must:

a)            Decide which industry segments or options to explore

b)           Create a target company list

c)            Locate sample job descriptions of positions that interest you

Informational Interview

  1. Develop 8 – 10 informational interview questions
  2. Conduct an interview with one of your network contacts.
  • Ideally you should interview someone in your chosen industry and one of the companies you explored in your report but if that is not possible, it is OK.
    Remember this is NOT a job interview!!!!
  1. Submit your questions and the answers obtained from the interview
  2. Explain, in half a page, what you learned from this informational interview that will help you in your full-time job search when you graduate from College. Tell me if you got any referrals.

Upon my graduation, I am interested in working with Adidas Company, whose headquarter is located in Herzogenaurach in Germany. The Company deals in manufacturing and supplying a range of sports equipment, footwear, and sports shoes for games.
