Like Paper #1, this paper should present an argument that focuses on a topic regarding endangered species. However, it must be significantly different from your first paper. (In other words, you may not use any of the material from your first paper in your second paper.)
The thesis for Paper #2 may not be only a claim of fact. It must be a claim of value, a claim of policy, or a combination claim of fact and value or policy.
Once you have developed your new thesis, you must then support it thoroughly with solid, credible sources. Paper #2 must be a minimum of 6 pages in length.
You will need to use at least five (5) good sources for this paper, each of which must be accurately documented and cited according to MLA8 guidelines. At least four (4) of your sources must be scholarly materials from the Academic Databases.
Remember that an argument research paper requires the writer’s full engagement with the research materials. Do not skim your sources and pull a quotation here and there to sprinkle onto the page. Thoroughly read and understand your sources so that you are presenting an intelligent argument. If you do not understand one or more of the sources that you locate, please do not attempt to use them in your paper, as it will be clear to your reader that you do not comprehend the complexity of your subject matter.
As you research and read articles that you will be using as support, make sure you print and highlight your sources/ take notes in the margins/ take notes on separate paper. And keep your sources—throw nothing away! This will help you a great deal when it comes time to write your Annotated Bibliography.

Endangered Species
Chinese Alligators also known as Yangtze Alligators is the most endangered species in the crocodilian family. The American Alligators and Chinese alligators are the only two living species in alligator, a genus in the family Alligatored. Today, only fewer than 130 alligators left in the world. Due to extreme habitat loss and contaminated food resources, their populations are still declining. Chinese alligators can be traced back to Mesozoic Era, which means they have a great value in the study of the origin and evolution of reptiles. Sitting near the top of the food chain, Chinese alligators are useful makers for the health of the rest of local ecosystem. Although many alligators’ conservation area and groups has been created, we must understand the value of Chinese alligators and start protecting them with more responsibly.
First, Chinese alligator is a species with a long history which has great contribution to the study of development of the reptiles. Lots of scientists use Chinese alligators’ fossils to study the origin and evolution of reptiles. According to Wilfred T. Neill, he states that genetic evidence indicates that these Yangtze alligators spilt from American alligators around 40 million years ago, and these two kinds of alligators spilt from all other living creatures around the same time as the extinction of their close relatives, the dinosaurs (Neill 293-294). Chinese alligators have high-value on the study of ancient reptiles, because scientists can find number of clues on Chinese alligators. Asian elephants are threatened by a combination of factors such as conflict with humans, deforestation, and poaching. While the population of Asian elephants stood at about 100,000 at the turn of the 20th century, the number has reduced to between 35,000 and 40,000 currently. If efforts are not taken to protect Asian elephants from human activities, it is likely that they will go extinct in the future. It is important to recognize that elephants play a significant role in preserving the ecological balance of their habitat. Not only do they spread the seeds of the plants they consume, but they also limit vegetation growth. The extinction of elephants will deny future generations the chance of viewing them. As the largest living land animal on the continent, Asian elephants are not only a tourist attraction but also an important part of religion and culture. Despite its significance to humans, they still face the threat of extinction. Therefore, this essay argues that Asian elephants are valuable and there is a need for more conservation efforts to protect them from possible extinction.
Asian elephants are valuable species but their population is threatened by human activities. The Asian elephant is currently categorized under the Red List as ‘endangered’ by the World Conservation Union (Perera 41). While the listing of the species as ‘endangered’ goes a long way in creating awareness about the situation, it is not enough to prevent the decline of the elephants. Asia has seen a drastic decline in the number of wild elephants due to human population increase, forest habitat loss and degradation, and fragmentation of populations (Perera 41). Most of the factors causing the decline of Asian elephants are related to human activities and therefore they can be managed. According to Kumar, Mudappa, and Raman, human activities have resulted in shrinking of elephant herds particularly in protected areas that adjoin human-dominated landscapes (144). It is important to recognize the survival of elephants depends to great extent on numbers that make up the herds. With compressed herds as a result of human activities, the future of this valuable species is uncertain. Kumar, Mudappa, and Raman also point out that frequent encounters between elephants and humans in landscapes with cropland and settlements affect negatively the long-term conservation of the species (144). The human-elephant conflict that is widespread across the continent is thus a significant challenge in the efforts to protect elephants. It is evident that if legislative measures are not put in place to control the situation, the population of Asian elephants will continue declining. Elephants are valuable creatures and it is imperative that governments and relevant bodies set up measures to prevent further decline in their numbers. The listing of the species as endangered under the Red List is important in soliciting for government effort and support but it is not enough to help reverse the situation.
