One of the challenges for a rapidly increasing world population is the need to produce more food to feed the people. At the same time, land that would ordinarily be suitable for farming and grazing has shrunk over time, because of industrialization and lack of adequate conservation efforts. At the moment, food manufacturers are more concerned about quantity and not quality, and consumers prefer cheap food, whereby manufactured food is typically cheaper than fresh food in the U.S. To increase food yield and production, fertilizers, and some form of steroids have been used, while food manufacturers have increasingly used food flavors and other chemicals and made the food even unhealthier. Sodium chloride found in salt has mostly been used to impart flavor, and though excessive consumption of salt is harmful, consumer preferences dictate flavors and taste interactions (Liem et al 700). This paper highlights that there are increased health risk from manufactured foods, as they add flavoring and preservatives to maintain food flavors.
The topic is of interest as manufacturers seek to get more people to feed on their products by adding food additives and flavors (Jones 1). Food manufacturers are heavily processing there products and this is likely to have harmful long term effect on people’s health. There is no doubt that the debate on food obesity has put pressure on food manufacturers. Similarly, health experts and health campaigners are increasingly looking into ways through which food manufacturers encourage and promote over- eating (Jones 1). Even with the knowledge that food manufactures manipulate tastes through flavors, the popularity of such foods make it to hard to tackle the issue of flavoring in manufactured foods.
