Introduction
The tragedy of Julius Caesar is a history play by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's unique style of disaster shows a protagonist character who has flaws, and his poor choices cause his tragic downfall. This thesis will revolve around the principles derived from the internal analysis of the play. It will focus on the critical analysis of the underlying structures of ideas of the play. The "tragedy" of Julius Caesar invokes Shakespeare’s theoretical concept of the play. This thesis will explain the historical context in the text's interpretations and the relevance of unconscious elements and language. It will also show how the play is a context of ancient Rome's culture rather than the individual author. It will revolve around the significant characters; Caesar, Portia, Mark Antony, and Cassius.
The setting of the play takes occurs in ancient Rome. Julius Caesar overthrew Pompey and his sons and returned to Rome in victory. Caesar’s influence and power are gradually increasing, and he is elected the consul for a lifetime. This highest office in the Roman republic gives him unprecedented power. The overall feeling among Romans is, they are happy to recover from war, and they do not imagine the threat of their republic becoming an empire led by a king. After Caesar's assassination, it takes around eleven years until Octavius and Antony’s alliance. The drama unfolds the ends, motives, and convictions. Shakespeare’s point of view in the play is that particular characters are privileged over others. This view is achieved through the use of soliloquies and asides. This technique helps certain characters stand out and also gives a preview of their decisions and motive (“Julius Caesar Donmar,” 45). The audience can see the insights Of Cassius, Antony, and Brutus. In certain moments, the point of view aligns with the characters whose actions determine the play's narrative. The statement also changes with the characters whose decisions are more consequential. Cassius initially works in the conspiracy to unseat Caesar and is later joined by Brutus. Antony then swears revenge against the conspirators, and this point of view helps the audience understand the motives of the three main characters. Caesar's crowning does not happen in action, but it is a third-hand interpretation of Cassius and Brutus. The emphasis of Cassius's experience over Caesar's established the Cassius point of view is the most prominent. The audience can experience personal insights into his intentions. Cassius is the key instigator of the conspiracy, and the audience is acquired precedence over the plot.
Shakespeare uses language as a literacy tool in the play. He writes with a combination of verse and prose. He explores rhythm and structure while at the same time his conversational way of speaking lacks structure and rhythm. Most Julius Caesar is expressed in verse.
