For this assignment, you must produce a 3 page focused analysis of the cultural artifact you've chosen to work with during the semester. Your artifact should demonstrate a high level of cultural capital, connect to contemporary social and cultural issues, allow for complex yet manageable analysis, and connect to your interest.  This analysis will serve as the basis for your further research.


Keep in mind the meaning of analysis; according to the authors of The Writer’s Companion, analysis is “unraveling a knot, solving a mystery, making something murky clear. To analyze something is to investigate how and why it is the way it is—to seek to understand the way it is working” (p. 25). Consider it your job to attempt to define and explain what you see in your cultural artifact.


Rhetorical analysis is the main goal of this assignment, therefore the argument portion of this paper (recognition of patterns, details, and visual elements, connections/claims, “so what?”) will be weighed most heavily. I do not expect you to have a developed thesis at this point. I do expect you to spend time comparing/contrasting the styles, voices, word choice, logic, visual elements, genre, audience, effectiveness, etc. of your selected artifact. Your job is to show how presentation of information affects its reception and to draw significant conclusions about rhetorical techniques present in the artifact.


Objectives:



  • Produce a focused analysis of the primary source you have chosen that fits within the scope of our course theme

  • Finish the analysis with a paragraph that includes one or two open-ended research questions that will help guide you toward developing a working thesis and finding secondary source materials (i.e. questions that cannot be answered with “yes” or “no”)

  • Create an analysis that will serve as the basis for your research, secondary source integration, and further assignments.

  • Start your paper by identifying basic information about the source.

    • What is it?

    • Where did it come from?

    • Who made it?



  • Finish the analysis with a paragraph that includes one or two open-ended research questions (questions that arise from observations about the source) that will help guide you toward developing a working thesis and finding secondary source materials (i.e. questions that cannot be answered with “yes” or “no”).

Cultural Artifacts


Your chosen cultural artifact will anchor most of the work you'll do this semester. It’s important, then, that you reflect critically on what constitutes a successful cultural artifact for analysis.


Successful cultural artifacts should:



  1. Demonstrate a high level of cultural capital. You might want to select a well-known and/or highly circulated artifact for analysis.

  2. Connect to contemporary social and cultural issues. Your analysis may be more successful if your artifact connects to contemporary social-cultural issues.

  3. Allow for complex yet manageable analysis. Your cultural artifact needs to be limited enough in scope that you can effectively analyze all its evidence, yet complex enough that you can situate it in a significant cultural context.

  4. Connect to your topical interests. Think creatively! It's important that your cultural artifact connects to your personal and academic interests.

The New Top Gun Movie Trailer
When actors do sequels, they stand the chance to either outdo or outclass what they did previously or fail to reach the heights of their success. In 1986, Tom Cruise had the chance to wow audiences across the world with his acting and this he did. Top Gun 1986 was quite successful and helped to showcase the acting skills of Tom Cruise. In fact, Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast were so good in the movie that they influenced military recruitment. 34 years later, Tom Cruise is back at it again and this time he takes the role of a trainer who is gifted the opportunity to help develop young pilots. Having already had success with the first Top Gun movie, much is expected from Tom Cruise and his new cast members. From the movie trailer, one cannot be faulted to think that the movie will not deliver or live up to its hype. Tom Cruise is known to deliver movies that challenge the acting norms and the Top Gun Maverick appears to be one among his many great success stories. From the trailer, one also notices the love for one’s country and job. The movie also exhibits the theme of sacrifice as Tom Cruise appears to be the same Maverick from the last Top Gun movie. He may have grown a little older but he still showcases the same gusto or personality as in the first movie. The trailer sends a clear message to the audience that the experience of watching the movie will not only be magical but also inspirational. In the words of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun Maverick is “a love letter to aviation.” It is a movie that speaks to the youthful dreams people have of being pilots, and the trailer explicitly shows that it delivers a masterpiece. In this paper, the focus will be on how the movie communicates the themes of love, patriotism, and sacrifice.
First of all, it is crucial to mention that this movie is based on two Top Gun Maverick trailers. In a quest to capture the essence of the trailer, interact with the trailer more, and learn more about the mystery that is Maverick, this paper considers two Paramount trailers that were both released in 2019.
As the trailer starts, there is a monologue that explains why Maverick has stagnated and has not been able to move ahead in his career. “Combat medals, citations, the only man shot down three enemy planes in the last forty years. Yet you can’t get a promotion, you won’t retire, you should at least be a two-star admiral by now, but yet you are, captain. What is that?” From this monologue, one gathers that Maverick is not a tad different from the old Maverick whose first love was piloting. He is still courageous, talented, stubborn, and a loner. However, for someone with some basic military knowledge, it is clear that there is an inconsistency with this particular bit of the movie. In 1986, Maverick was a lieutenant and to have a captain with 30-plus years of service appears to be inconsistent. However, the above could hold true if the captain had “previous enlisted experience” (Werner). Another explanation could be if “there’s a break in service” or if “Maverick would be if he were retired but retained in service” (Werner)....
