Amazon Labor Union
The Amazon Labor Union (ALU) refers to the grassroots movement that was formed by Amazon.com workers on 20th April 2021. Employees at Staten Island warehouse, JFK8, were the first ones to become unionized and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recognizes them. Christian Smalls was the person behind the formation of the ALU since he is a labor-activist leader of the group known as The Congress of Essential Workers (TCOEW). Smalls was accompanied by Derrick Palmer, the assistant president of ALU, who had organized a protest based on how Amazon.com handled its employees during the Covid-19 pandemic. The firing of Smalls was highly criticized by some government officials and led to several strikes by TCOEW members. At Staten Island, JFK8, Amazon.com warehouse workers voted in favor of the ALU, winning by 2,654 votes (Cline-Thomas). Despite 2,131 employees rejecting the union bid, the NLRB oversaw the entire process and declared the victory for the ALU.
Numerous large organizations, such as Amazon.com, have always rejected the idea of unionizing their works. That permits them to treat their employees how they want since they do not have a bargaining power that can only be achieved through unionization. Based on Smalls, effective unions need to have unionized Amazom.com before establishing workers’ solidarity. The ALU is the first independent Amazon.com union in the United States of America (USA). President Joe Biden said that he is glad for the ALU in its effort to see that employees' voices are heard, which is why every worker should have a fair and free choice to become a union member. Another election was held at Staten Island, LDJ5, where the NLRB presided and tallied the votes. Among 1,600 voters who were eligible, there was a turnout rate of around 66% and 380 voted in favor of the ALU while 618 voted against unionization (Weise et al.). As such, every Amazon.com worker has the right to choose whether to join the ALU or not.
Amazon.com workers needed a union to bring them together so that their voices could be heard. Smalls said that he was fired from Amazon.com, Staten Island, under unclear conditions. The company’s executives just suggested that they needed to undercut its workforce and did not give proper details explaining why some employees were fired. For example, the reason behind Smalls being fired from Amazon.com was that he was not articulate and smart (O’Brien). The majority of workers at Staten Island, JFK8, did not hesitate to join the union when they were given a chance since they understood its importance. In reality, large corporations took advantage of their workers, which is why they significantly reject unions to destroy any effort of employees’ solidarity.
The win for the ALU at Staten Island, JFK8, is crucial and motivates Amazon.com employees from different parts of the world to unionize and get bargaining power. In 2021, Will Evans reported to The Atlantic that the working conditions for Amazon.com warehouse workers were exploitative. For instance, he cited few breaks, long shifts, and a high rate of injury (Serwer). However, Amazon.com employees cannot talk since they...
